7. TRUE GRIT
Joel and Ethan Coen's eloquent and sometimes hilarious adaptation of the splendid Charles Portis novel joins the pantheon of great Westerns alongside The Searchers, The Wild Bunch, and Unforgiven. Jeff Bridges will drive out memories of John Wayne's 1969 Oscar-winning performance in the same role as he plays crapulous US marshal Rooster Cogburn, who's enlisted by indomitable 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) to hunt down her father's killer. Humane, magnificent, and tragic.
