BSFC Award Ceremony Feb. 6!
The other night a billion or so people watched a bunch of
overdressed, sometimes inebriated Hollywood
celebrities accept trumped up awards. The Golden Globes, they call them. Well,
if you were one of the unfortunates who tuned in you might be asking yourself
a) "What's wrong with Harrison Ford? He looks like he's coming out of
anesthesia" and b) "That was terrible: where can I see a quality movie awards program?"
Well, the answer to the second question is the Brattle Theatre www.brattlefilm.org at 7 p.m. on
February 6 when the Boston Society of Film Critics www.thebsfc.org (of which I am a proud member) holds its Third
Annual Awards Ceremony. And this promises to be the best one yet.
Among the winners who will accept their award on the legendary
Brattle stage will be the terrific Jeremy Renner, who won the BSFC's prize for
Best Actor for his performance as the fearless demolitions expert in Kathryn
Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker."
Also on hand will be the
two guys who won the Best Editing prize for the same film, lots of local
winners, and a bunch of film critics messing up their presentation speeches! But
not the lovely and extra-smart cultural critic (and BSFC member) Joyce Kulhawik
doing emcee duty! All that topped off by a screening of "The Hurt Locker,"
winner of the BSFC's prize for Best Picture! Oh, and I almost forgot, there's a
reception somewhere! And other surprises!
True, there will be no
sneak peeks at Mo'Nique's hairy legs, but I can guarantee it will be a better
time than watching last night's election returns.
