THE WHO, CIRCA 1971: Townshend eyes Daltrey. Suspiciously, perhaps?
It was the last of a three-night stand for the Who at the Music Hall, but this night was special because their pal Rod Stewart was also in town, playing on the Common as the Faces with Rod Stewart. There’s nothing better than an unexpected collaboration, and you can’t blame several thousand Bostonians for guessing they might just get one when Stewart finished his set and made his way over to hang with the Who. It almost happened. Stewart was there, waiting in the wings. Unfortunately, the ever-feuding Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend had a row mid show, after a spirited Townshend knocked over an amp, hitting a roadie and causing blood to flow. As Phoenix/FNX staffer David Bieber remembers, “Daltrey was so infuriated he stormed offstage and did not reappear.” Neither did the rest of the Who, to say nothing of their rooster-haired friend.
